“This is a fucking waste of time.”
The voice of Desdemona ‘Desi’ Siddiqui filled the air and it was full of disdain. The 22-year old turquoise-haired musician for the band Basic White Guys stepped out from behind her drums and shoved her sticks in the back pocket of her skinny jeans.
“We have a fucking gig in two days and very limited time to practice. Gypsy doesn't get to just waltz in here and ask to play around the microphone!”
‘Gypsy’ was 19-year old Capri Alatorre and someone Desi absolutely despised. It baffled Desi to no end that the sun could basically rise and set on Capri, and how everyone she loved catered to this person Desi considered a total loser.
Capri had just shown up to Liam Berelc's childhood home. The parents of the band's lead singer had been letting the group practice in their basement for years. Despite the fact the band kinda sucked, the group of childhood best friends took it seriously, and somehow continued getting booked all around San Diego.
Desi's older brother by six minutes Malachi Siddiqui let out a sigh. He was the band's bassist. "Des, we've been at it for two hours. Go fuckin' chill for a bit."
Desi pursed her lips. Malachi was a wrestler-in-training and Capri's best friend. She'd never won an argument with him when Capri was involved. Capri and Malachi had met at The Plant during class and both trained with Riley Calix.
The guitarist for the band, Javier Martinez held up his iPhone. "I need to take this anyway. Indie had that meeting today and I want to see how it went."
Desi knew it was a losing battle and stormed out of the garage.
Capri bit down on her bottom lip and looked down at the microphone Liam had taken off the stand for her. "I don't want her to be mad. Malachi told me you guys were about to break and I could practice cutting a promo. I didn't know I was interrupting."
"You're not," Liam promised, and when Capri looked over at Malachi for reassurance, Malachi winked at her. Malachi had seen Capri completely bomb in class earlier that day, and what better audience for her to practice on than their little group?
"I just think it's dumb to trash talk your opponent. Like Andrew kept saying to just tell him why I'm better than Ryker, but like how do I know that? I've never had a match." Capri was referring to her opponent for Asylum XIII, Ryker Rylee. Capri had never expected her first match in So-Cal to be against someone who had just competed for a championship shot, but she had quickly come around to that reality. "Like Ryker doesn't have the most experience, but he just competed for a title shot and he probably should have won that match. Like who knows what would have happened if all that stuff hadn't gone down at ringside?"
Malachi frowned. Capri didn't talk a lot about her father, but Colton's presence in So-Cal had disturbed the brunette's peace of mind. Malachi knew there wasn't much of a relationship there even though Capri wanted there too be, and no one could figure out why Colton's fiancee seemed to be so enamored with Ryker Rylee.
"Have you spoken to your dad?"
Liam knew about as much as Malachi did. The three of them were roommates and extremely close.
Capri sighed. "He wants me to have dinner with him tomorrow night so Sayani and I can meet, but I don't know. I just want to avoid any distractions and concentrate on my first match. Ryker intimidates me because he's such a hard hitter. There is no one at The Plant that we've faced that is like him. He's a pure fighter, and I don't really think I can wrestle him. I just know everyone is going to have super high expectations for me and I don't want to let anyone down. What if I freak out once the bell rings, and forget everything Riley and Andrew have shown me? What if I forget how to reverse a submission? What if I go to jump off the top rope and slip?"
"None of those things are going to happen," Malachi quickly replied. The worried look on Capri's face bothered him more than it should. "You're just as quick as Ryker and lighter on your feet than him. Your agility will help you avoid his strikes, just like they let you avoid Riley's whenever he's worked you. You're smart, Gypsy. You won't forget what you've learned and you'll figure out how to win."
Capri just shrugged. "Well, if I can't even cut a promo in class..."
"You can cut a promo. You just need to stop being shy and show your personality." Liam wasn't wrong. Capri was definitely shy around people she didn't know. "Try it."
Capri looked down at the microphone in her hand. Liam and Malachi looked nothing but supportive and finally, she relented. "Don't make fun of me, no matter what."
Neither one made her any promises.
