FADE IN:
INT. BEDROOM – MORNING - JUNE 1ST, 2017
A foot taps loudly on the floor, creating a beat.
MUSIC CUE:
The man’s back faces the mirror as his foot continues to tap to the sound of music, and he pulls his jacket up over his shoulders.
Now, his head begins to move, matching the pace of his tap-dancing foot.
Just beside him to his left sits a dresser, and he reaches out and snatches a comb off it. He tosses the comb in the air, over his head, and snatches it with his right hand.
He spins around to look in the mirror, running the comb through his hair in the process.
Ian Echo freezes at the sight of himself in the mirror. Taking a good long look, he commences a staring contest with himself.
IAN ECHO
“I’m back.”
“I’m back.”
He grins.
END MUSIC.
CUT TO:
INT. LIVING ROOM – CONTINUOUS
Ian Echo enters the living room, whistling and very proud of himself while in the background, Oddball sits by the window, staring outside.
Ian stops everything and looks at his friend.
IAN ECHO
“My friend, have we not gone over
this a thousand times?”
“My friend, have we not gone over
this a thousand times?”
Oddball doesn't look back, doesn't even move.
IAN ECHO (CONT’D)
“He’s gone. He’s never coming back.”
“He’s gone. He’s never coming back.”
Oddball places his hand on the window.
ODDBALL
“He said he was just going to get
cigarettes. He would be right
back, he – he will be back.”
“He said he was just going to get
cigarettes. He would be right
back, he – he will be back.”
IAN ECHO
“That was six months ago. Six months,
Oddball! It's time to realize he
deserted you. He’s gone, and he's
never coming back. You—“
ODDBALL
“He WILL be back.”
“That was six months ago. Six months,
Oddball! It's time to realize he
deserted you. He’s gone, and he's
never coming back. You—“
ODDBALL
“He WILL be back.”
Ian walks towards Oddball.
ODDBALL (CONT’D)
(Softly)
“We're going to be a happy
family: me, him, and our
daughter.”
(Softly)
“We're going to be a happy
family: me, him, and our
daughter.”
IAN ECHO
“Odd. Never say that aloud; he’d
probably murder you right on the
spot if he heard you say that.”
ODDBALL
“He wouldn't. He wouldn't dare hurt
the mother of his child!”
IAN ECHO
“You aren't the mother of his
child, Odd.”
ODDBALL
“I am, too!”
IAN ECHO
“No. Just because you have a vagina
and breasts doesn't make you her
mother. Sorry, but that is not
how it works.”
ODDBALL
“YES, IT DOES!”
“Odd. Never say that aloud; he’d
probably murder you right on the
spot if he heard you say that.”
ODDBALL
“He wouldn't. He wouldn't dare hurt
the mother of his child!”
IAN ECHO
“You aren't the mother of his
child, Odd.”
ODDBALL
“I am, too!”
IAN ECHO
“No. Just because you have a vagina
and breasts doesn't make you her
mother. Sorry, but that is not
how it works.”
ODDBALL
“YES, IT DOES!”
Oddball jumps to his feet and storms out of the room, crying.
IAN ECHO
“Oddball!”
“Oddball!”
A door slams shut in the background.
Ian shakes his head as he runs his hand through his hair.
IAN ECHO
(Quietly)
“Such a strange fellow.”
WOMAN'S VOICE
“Relationship problems?”
(Quietly)
“Such a strange fellow.”
WOMAN'S VOICE
“Relationship problems?”
Ian Echo jumps into the air, caught off guard by the voice. He lands on his feet, stumbles, trips over the coffee table, and crashes to the floor.
The woman laughs.
WOMAN'S VOICE
“I will say, you two make such
an adorable couple. Cutie
patooties.”
“I will say, you two make such
an adorable couple. Cutie
patooties.”
Ian hurries to his feet as he grabs whatever he can find to use as a weapon. The only thing he finds is what he tripped over, and that is the coffee table.
He holds the coffee table between himself and the voice.
The fear leaves him as he quickly finds out who the voice belongs to: in the doorway leading to the kitchen stands Alicia Frost.
She bites into an apple.
Ian puts down the coffee table, his expression soured.
IAN ECHO
“Shut your mouth, you filthy whore!”
ALICIA FROST
“Now, now, no need for name-calling
there, little boy.”
IAN ECHO
“I'm NOT! A! BOY!”
ALICIA FROST
“Right, right, you are a man.”
“Shut your mouth, you filthy whore!”
ALICIA FROST
“Now, now, no need for name-calling
there, little boy.”
IAN ECHO
“I'm NOT! A! BOY!”
ALICIA FROST
“Right, right, you are a man.”
She chuckles.
Ian clenches his fist.
IAN ECHO
(mumbling)
“Bitch.”
ALICIA FROST
“Oh, did a grumpy little boy wake up
on the wrong side of the bed
this morning? Or—”
(mumbling)
“Bitch.”
ALICIA FROST
“Oh, did a grumpy little boy wake up
on the wrong side of the bed
this morning? Or—”
She places her pointer finger to her temple.
ALICIA FROST
“Oddball not putting out? Its V-jay closed?”
Ian Echo’s face goes red as Alicia laughs. Ian storms across the living room and gets right into Alicia's face.
IAN ECHO
“Speak again, you vile woman, and I will
rip that tongue right out of that
disgusting mouth of yours and shove
it down your throat!”
ALICIA FROST
“Oh, I like it rough.”
“Speak again, you vile woman, and I will
rip that tongue right out of that
disgusting mouth of yours and shove
it down your throat!”
ALICIA FROST
“Oh, I like it rough.”
She sticks out her tongue.
Ian goes to grab her tongue. Alicia doesn't flinch, doesn't even move.
MALE VOICE
“Little boy.”
“Little boy.”
Ian stops and screams as he spins around.
IAN ECHO
“I will.”
“I will.”
Ian Echo freezes at the sight of Frost. The monstrous man towers over Ian.
FROST
“You’ll what, little… boy?”
Ian has no words.
ALICIA FROST
“Rip out your tongue and cram it
down your throat, boo.”
Ian’s face turns pale.
IAN ECHO (CONT’D)
“No.”
ALICIA FROST
“So just my tongue then?”
IAN ECHO
“No. NO! I was joking; I was only kidding.”
“Rip out your tongue and cram it
down your throat, boo.”
IAN ECHO
“What?”
“What?”
Ian’s face turns pale.
IAN ECHO (CONT’D)
“No.”
ALICIA FROST
“So just my tongue then?”
IAN ECHO
“No. NO! I was joking; I was only kidding.”
Ian turns back to Alicia, walks beside her, and places his arm around her.
IAN ECHO
“I'd never do that to you; you
are my friend.”
“I'd never do that to you; you
are my friend.”
Alicia pushes Ian away from her with disgust, and Ian almost falls to the floor.
Ian moves a distance away from the married couple. He adjusts his coat and fixes his hair while making sure he returns to the coffee table, so he has something between himself and them.
IAN ECHO
“Can I say, wow, I can see why my
father kept you around for so
long. You are just a beast.”
ALICIA FROST
“Did you just call my boo… ugly?”
IAN ECHO
“No, like I meant he looks like a monster.”
ALICIA FROST
“Monsters are ugly.”
“Can I say, wow, I can see why my
father kept you around for so
long. You are just a beast.”
ALICIA FROST
“Did you just call my boo… ugly?”
IAN ECHO
“No, like I meant he looks like a monster.”
ALICIA FROST
“Monsters are ugly.”
Ian closes his eyes.
IAN ECHO
“Stop trying to trap me you st—“
“Stop trying to trap me you st—“
Ian's eyes open back up, and he stops.
ALICIA FROST
“Oh please, do finish that sentence.”
IAN ECHO
“I—“
“Oh please, do finish that sentence.”
IAN ECHO
“I—“
The door behind them in the background opens up.
Oddball walks out in a pink robe, curlers scattered around his hair and a facial mask applied all around his face. He walks by the three, holding a box of Kleenex, not stopping to look at them.
ODDBALL
(Very sad)
“Hi, Frost. Hi, Alicia.”
(Very sad)
“Hi, Frost. Hi, Alicia.”
They all watch him as he walks past Alicia, who stands in the doorway, and disappears into the kitchen.
Alicia looks to Frost. She points towards Ian, curls her pointer finger on her left hand so that it touches her thumb, then moves her other pointer finger on her right hand in and out, a gesture that Ian Echo notices.
Ian Echo gives her the finger, but when he notices Frost staring at him, he shakes it, pretending he has somehow hurt it.
IAN ECHO
“Cramps.”
“Cramps.”
He stops shaking his finger.
IAN ECHO
“Anyways, I think we’ve got off track
here, but you are probably wondering
why I asked Oddball to track you down.”
Beat.
IAN ECHO
“Well Frankie, he once told me that
you had made a promise to my father,
that if anything were to ever happen
to him, that you’d look after me.
That you’d—“
ALICIA FROST
“Old Frankie! Whatever happened to
him, thought he was looking after
you, was he not?”
“Well Frankie, he once told me that
you had made a promise to my father,
that if anything were to ever happen
to him, that you’d look after me.
That you’d—“
ALICIA FROST
“Old Frankie! Whatever happened to
him, thought he was looking after
you, was he not?”
FLASHBACK
INT. THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE – CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE – YEAR AGO
Ian Echo drives a knife repeatedly into the back of Frankie Dayz. Blood splatters over his shirt and face as he cries.
CUT TO:
INT. LIVING ROOM – CONTINUOUS
IAN ECHO
(Coldly)
“His son killed my father, so I
took his.”
(Coldly)
“His son killed my father, so I
took his.”
Ian Echo shakes his head.
IAN ECHO (CONT’D)
“He said you made a promise—“
FROST
“No. Little. Boy."
IAN ECHO
“What?”
“He said you made a promise—“
FROST
“No. Little. Boy."
IAN ECHO
“What?”
Ian looks taken back.
IAN ECHO
“But. But you made a promise.”
FROST
“A promise? You fool, a promise is
just a chain attached. Little.
Boy. Do you see a chain? No.
Because chains are always fuckin’
broken, AH!”
“A promise? You fool, a promise is
just a chain attached. Little.
Boy. Do you see a chain? No.
Because chains are always fuckin’
broken, AH!”
Frost turns and heads towards the direction of the door. Alicia smirks as she hurries on by Ian and catches up with Frost.
IAN ECHO
“Wait!”
“Wait!”
Frost and Alicia keep walking.
IAN ECHO (CONT’D)
“Please!”
“Please!”
Frost grabs the handle of the front door.
IAN ECHO
“I can give you what you want!
I know where he is!”
“I can give you what you want!
I know where he is!”
Frost stops, hand still on the doorknob.
FROST
“What is it you seek.”
IAN ECHO
“For you to be my monster.”
“What is it you seek.”
IAN ECHO
“For you to be my monster.”
Beat.
IAN ECHO
(Coldly)
“And vengeance!”
(Coldly)
“And vengeance!”
Frost opens the door, and Alicia walks out first.
IAN ECHO
“Will you?”
“Will you?”
Frost steps out. He turns his head and looks back over his shoulder.
FROST
“Lie, and you will die.”
“Lie, and you will die.”
Frost slams the door behind him.
IAN ECHO
“I don't get what that means."
ODDBALL
“It means if you are lying,”
“I don't get what that means."
ODDBALL
“It means if you are lying,”
Ian jumps again, this time grabbing his chest as he looks back at Oddball, who has the box of Kleenex stuck in his armpit and holds a small tub of ice cream in one hand and a spoon in the other.
ODDBALL (CONT’D)
“he will kill you.”
“he will kill you.”
IAN ECHO
“Thanks, I understood that part, but
what I meant was, I don't know what
he means; is that a yes or no?”
“Thanks, I understood that part, but
what I meant was, I don't know what
he means; is that a yes or no?”
Oddball grabs a spoonful of ice cream and shoves it in his mouth.
ODDBALL
“I'd take it as a yes. Oh my, this
chocolate just melts in your mouth.”
Oddball takes another scoop and puts the spoon to Ian’s mouth.
Ian looks at it for a moment.
IAN ECHO
“That's vanilla.”
ODDBALL
“Really?”
“That's vanilla.”
ODDBALL
“Really?”
Ian eats the cream from the spoon.
END.
