JULY 26TH. 2017. JUNIOR SEAU MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
Alex’s words continue to echo inside Paige’s head.
“I DID THIS FOR YOU PAIGE! You ungrateful bitch! I did this for you!”
After her girlfriend was hauled off in handcuffs, Paige finally agreed to go to the hospital. What was supposed to be a short visit ended up being a 2 night accommodation due to her medical history from her previous head injury. When the doctors saw her condition and was told of type of match she was in, they admitted her for observation incase any symptoms from the past resurfaced.
She hates hospitals. Sometimes it's the eerie silence. Sometimes, the noise of doctors walking down the hallway. Most of all, the smell. The smell brought back the horrific memories of doctors sticking tubes down her throat and pumping her stomach until she started to cough up bile.
One irritated her more than anything than having to be there was that she couldn’t even look Alex in the face because she was ashamed. This wasn’t just a lost. It was a sacrifice that Alex made to ensure she had gotten a shot at the TP title and now it was all for nothing because she couldn’t do her part.
And she hated herself for it.
Her dark brown brown eyes look up at the blank TV screen. She didn’t even bother to turn it on not once since being admitted, afraid she’d come across newsfeeds reporting the arrest. But she couldn’t stand the fucking silence. The more it filled the room, the more it caused her brain to run through a million thoughts about the phone call from the night before.
“H-hello?....Alex? Are you okay”
“Where are you?”
“I’m at the hospital. Junior Seau Memorial.”
“Good.”
A moment of unsure silence passes.
“Alex, I wasn’t turning my back on you. I was just..”
“Get some rest, Paige. I’ll see you soon”
Before Paige could say anything else, she heard the click and the dial tone. Was she still pissed? Was she going to be out for blood the first chance she got? Paige looks back down at her phone that she’s been clutching onto for the good part of the day as she kept going into her contacts and scrolling back and forth between Alex and Eve. She unlocks her phone for what felt like the 20th time in the past 30 minutes. Before she could even touch the screen, a familiar voice is heard outside of her door. Immediately recognizing who the voice belonged to, Paige shoves her phone under pillow turns on the TV. Thank God it was a Law and Order SVU marathon on.
Her door creeks open and, damn. It was Eli Silver. He walks in with a small smile on his face and sits down in the chair at her bedside. "Wow." he simply says while taken in the state of his supposed best friend. A bandage above her eyebrow. Bruises all up and down her arm with little nicks and cuts from the barbwire. "How are you holding up?"
“What are you doing here?” Paige’s voice filled with bitterness.
“I can’t visit a friend?”
“Friend??” Paige blurts out incredulously. “No. You don’t get to fucking do this. You don’t get to walk away from me and not say a word for the past MONTH and think you can just waltz in here and everything is just going to be forgotten. I have nothing to say to you. Get out.”
Eli seems to be a bit taken back by Paige’s reaction. He kinda chuckles to himself in shock and sort of looks around as if he’s being punked, looks at the floor, and then back up at Paige. Eli knows Paige well enough that she meant what she said. He rises from where he was sitting and begins to slowly make his way towards the door. He wanted to desperately get one last word in, but as he turns around and points his finger to say something, she cuts him off.
“DON’T. Get the fuck out! And stay the fuck outta my LIFE!” Paige’s chest is rising with anger as she puts her hands at her side as if she was about to get up. As Eli opens the door to leave, Eve slips in with a concerned look on her face, indicating that she obviously heard the yelling. She looks up at Eli with sympathetic eyes. He’s just rendered speechless and just walks out of the room after giving her a sympathetic nod in return. Eve looks at Paige and shakes her head in disappointment while closing the door. The brunette settles back down in her bed and gives her a look right back.
“So, what are you two, best friends now?”
“Paige…”
“Why did you bring him here? Were you two planning some kind of intervention or some other Dr. Phil bullshit?” It hasn’t even been a minute and Eve already was starting to regret going there.
“He wanted to come and make amends with you, but I suppose that didn’t turn out well” Paige makes an expression as if to say ‘ya think?!' “I actually came to see how you were doing. I know much you hate hospitals.” Eve sits in the chair “I saw your match with Rumble and Zander.”
“Well...I didn’t die.” Paige deadpans.
“Obviously, but look at you. It looks like you were in a fucking car wreck.”
“You should see my back. I look like Neve Campbell from The Craft." Paige chuckles to herself.
Sometimes Eve forgets that she’s married to a smart ass, but there goes the reminder. She blows out an annoyed breath and sneaks a glance at Paige’s shoulder. Her reddened skin beginning its path to her shoulder and her back which was hidden by the fact that she was sitting upright in a hospital bed. Eve spoke up before the silence got too awkward.
“What are you going to do now?”
“I’m going to go back and do what I should’ve been doing in the first place. Winning and not second guessing the person who's been by my side.”
“You don’t…” Eve takes a second to calm herself before she started to raise her voice “You don’t need her. Alex is a fucking snake in the grass and she’s got her fangs in your neck. Can’t you see that? She’s going to manipulate you any way she can. You don’t owe her anything.”
The hell I don’t. Alex risked everything she had to make sure Paige got what she wanted and she second guessed her, herself, and look what happened. Laid up in a fucking hospital with no belt. No payoff. Nothing, but a laceration above her eye that’s going to leave a permanent mark on her face, plenty more on her back, and a freshly broken hand.
“I think you should go.” Paige mutters quietly, pretending she’s watching TV when really all she doing is just staring at it and occasionally jabbing at her sad ass cup of jello with a plastic spoon. If it's one thing that gets to her the most, is hurting the woman she still loves and she's done more than enough of it already. Maybe if she continued to push her away, the pain will subside and the feelings would eventually go away.
Maybe.
Eve waits a beat before looking defeated, getting up from her seat, and exiting the room. When she’s in the hallway she kinda starts to look around, searching for a safe place to let down her barriers. Instead she just settles for a bench not too far down. She doesn’t cry, but she just leans back and closes her eyes with hands resting on her knees. Her brief meditation is interrupted when she feels another person sit next to her. She opens her right eye and immediately sits up, running her tongue across her teeth. “Oh, god…” She says in disgust as Alex looks at her with a shit eating grin.
“Having a bad day?” Alex mocks.
“Fuck you.” Eve folds her arms and crosses her legs defensively.
Paige? Oh, yes she is. When she’s feeling better of course. We gotta lot of making up to do,” Alex says smugly and turns towards Eve, “You know, That little stunt you pulled, barging into my office and slapping me? I will let it side just this once for Paige, but if it happens again-”
“What? You’re going to hire someone to take me out?”
Eve wanted to let Alex know that her threats didn't scare her. No matter what she was capable of.
“You would like that would you? For me to take you out." She does a quick look over on Eve before carefully tucking the blonde's hair behind her ear causing Eve to look at her with startled widened eyes from being caught off guard. “It’s a damn shame. The three of us could’ve been a great team” Alex leans in so she’s close enough to Eve’s ear in a seductive yet taunting manner, “She’s mine now.”
On that note, Alex gives a condescending pat on the thigh to Eve, before getting up and making her way to Paige's room. Eve watches her with a snarl as she walks away. She too then gets up and walks the opposite way to the double door exit.
Once she's in Paige's room, Alex immediately sets her purse down in the chair and goes over to Paige's side and kinda halfway sits on the bed. Paige finally did what she couldn't do before and looks at her without turning away again.
"How are you feeling?"
"Like shit." Paige raised her broken hand in the air to show the fresh cast. “I’m sorry. I should’ve fought harder to win. For myself. For you. I fucked up.” Paige says the last part in a harsh whisper. She didn’t realize how pissed off she was with herself until she looked off to the side and felt the angry tears trying to slip from the corner of her eyes. She blinks them away.
“Hey”, Alex while reassuringly putting her hand on Paige’s thigh, “We’re gonna get through this. Together. Okay?"
“I slept with Aryanna.” She just blurted it out. Another betrayal. Almost the same way she told Eve that she cheated on her with Alex. Bracing herself for another for another verbal tirade about her being ungrateful, Paige tenses up a little, and just lays her head back and, shutting her eyes and waiting for the onslaught.“I know.” Paige opens up her eyes. She looks at Alex with a furrowed brow, who's just looking completely unbothered.“I knew you had eyes for Aryanna. My first instinct was to be angry, but I also knew that she was just going to be a brief distraction. So I thought ‘why not?’. So now it’s done. Dora has been shipped off to Mexico in a crate. You got her out of your system and the distraction is gone. Now…”Alex reaches up, possessively grabs Paige by the back of her neck and brings their foreheads together. It’s just the two of us, just like it should’ve always been. I told you that I'll take care of you”
Alex crashes her lips against Paige’s in a heated kiss. It didn't last too long because as soon as Alex runs her hand across Paige's back, she pull back and hisses. “You should come home with me tomorrow so you can recover. We have a quite the road ahead of us.”
Paige agrees with a nod. "What about you? What's going to happen to with you?" Genuine concern filled Paige's voice. At this point she felt completely indebted to Alex and would leave the hospital against the Doctor's discretion if she needed her to. "Luckily, I have a kick ass Lawyer and my dad has ties to the judge who set my bail. The police have mostly circumstantial evidence at best. The main issue is that there's a...person. A witness. I have a good feeling of who it is. But right now we're gonna focus on getting you out of here."
"Whatever you need me to do, I'll do it. Just say the word." There was a firmness in Paige's voice. She wanted Alex to know that she wasn't going to fuck up again and let anyone or anything compromise what they have. All Alex had to do was look right into her dark brown eyes to know that she now has Paige right where she wants and need her. The business minded woman just gives a small smile at some looming ideas that are currently swirling around that pretty little head of hers. "We'll cross that bridge when we get to it."
And she hated herself for it.
