#FISTOFHYDRA 7.0
We all do things we said we’d never do.
Reality is when all good intentions turn to dust and you face yourself in the mirror, looking into your own eyes for the first time in a very long period. Searching for the person you used to be, but can never be again. There were amends that probably could’ve been made, but that would never happen.
“So what?!”
Something she couldn’t put a finger on had broken tonight, for better or worse. And while her conscience told her that this was wrong -- Elena couldn’t feel it. No remorse. No sympathy or empathy. Nothing. There was no way she could have stopped either of the events from taking place. Kei did his thing. Aaron did whatever the fuck she thought she had to do. And Elena? Watched the world end with a smile on her face.
Would you have done anything different?
Nope. And as untypical as it was for her, that was the honest truth. She was done being the mother to all of her friends, being the second best only to make someone else shine. The last bit of hope was taken when that masked punk appeared on the apron -- finishing what he had started.
Tried to finish.
Not even five minutes ago, she’d been sitting in front of that damn hospital room, soaking in the scent of the damned place, listening to nurses babble about the last episode of Grey’s Anatomy. She desperately wanted to get away from here. Not only the place -- the people too.
They need you.
Maybe so. But tonight wasn’t the night to push her any further. Gabriel would pick her up, whenever the car was ready. Her mind drifted off once more as she leaned back on the public, wooden bench, closing her eyes.
“I’m tired of hearing voices I don’t wanna hear any more. So loud that I can’t hold a thought.”
“What about my voice?”
Elena didn’t have to open her eyes to know who had just sat down next to her. Even if she had been blinded and deaf, she would have always felt his presence. His scent.
“You’ve quite the guts to show up here… if he sees you… you are a dead mean, Kei.” Her voice was neutral, maybe a little exhausted.
He chuckled slightly. “And yet, here I am. You did good out there, just not good enough.”
Elena’s eyes flew open and despite her body being cold and tired, she felt a burning under her skin. Hot enough to melt the skin off of his body. Underneath Kei’s mask, it was hard to read his expression, but she guessed that he looked amused. Proud even.
“Well darling, one way or another, I finished my job. You didn’t.” She smiled at him. “And colouring you as a smart man, you are aware that there isn’t another chance. So cheers for giving it your fucking best. We’ll send you a gift card and some cake.”
“So hostile tonight. I like it. Elena let me ask you something, one thing so essential that it can turn your whole life upside down: didn’t you enjoy the view?”
She wanted to say “no”, but for whatever reason her mouth wouldn’t open. And even worse, her mind wasn’t certain that this was the right answer. A sick feeling formed in her stomach.
“I hate to cut you short, Kei -- I really do. But different than you lingering around, striking people from behind, I’ve got an actual job. And they are like wolves at my door.”
“Are you talking about the new dude? Logan whatever.” He lit a cigarette, offering her one as well.
“Thanks, but no thanks. Traeger. Logan Traeger. Quite the impressive competitor from what I have seen. And despite what most would think, more than just muscles and raw power. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have beaten people like Bishop or Knupp.” She coughed out slightly, feeling burning pain in her ribs, but didn’t bother with it. “My opinion maybe does not matter, but the future looks bright for him -- if he can focus.”
For whatever reason he decided to listen to her. Maybe he had no other place to be -- or he was just tired himself. Even the devil needs a break now and then.
“And while I am fully aware of all his skills, I am walking into this battle with a smile. I came a long way. Go through the people I have beaten. And some of them I obviously done a favour, like Linc Coyne. Look where he is now after I kicked him off of his high horse? I have made my mark with technique and submissions, with determination and withstanding every ounce of pain they dished me. I am Elena fuckingDeDraca, that’s why.”
It was no later than that when the car arrived and Gabriel opened the door for her. Once more Elena looked over her shoulder.
Smiling.
